• SUCCESS - FULLY FUNDED: This fishing village of over 2,000 residents are isolated and were in need of a store for fishing nets and other provisions.  A group of those enrolled in the Peer-driven Change project there found a space and decided to start a village store.  They started with $300 that they and other villagers contributed. They were able to open the store in early 2022 and it has now quadruple in size and profitable.  They are expanding their vision and continue to save towards larger self-defined goals.  It is a wonderful story of the collective effort led by the residents.

About The Project

$2,000 Now fully funded to open up the village store.

Goal is expanded to $5,000 to add toilets and refrigeration units for the fish.

This fishing village of over 2,000 residents are isolated and were in need of a store for fishing nets and other provisions.  A group of those enrolled in the Peer-driven Change project there found a space and decided to start a village store.  They started with $300 that they and other villagers contributed. They started to sell fishing nets and found that the demand was for cement to build shelters.  They started with 70 bags of cement and now sell 400 bags per month.  Cement is too heavy for an individual to bring to the village and so they needed to expand.  Over the year the Center for Peer-driven Change and other donors were able to invest $1,300 for the expansion and the business has now quadrupled in size.  They will be donating some of their profits to other ventures and projects being led by villagers.  They also have a vision of buying refrigeration units so they can safely store the fish they bring in.  This is a wonderful self-made story by the villagers themselves.

Paying it Forward

The villagers all collaborate and they form groups to help the community in whatever efforts they have an interest or talent in.

Funding Report

Backstory

8 yrs ago (~ 2015) the fishing village received attention from the World Bank which committed to financing a storage facility and a freezer. As has happened before the promises from outside agencies have fallen through.  So now they are starting small, with a village store, then they will put in toilets and eventually get the refrigeration units they need.
