• This fishing village of 200 families needs a refrigeration facility so that they can catch fresh fish, sell fresh fish, then refrigerate/freeze the fish that doesn't sell that day, for future sales. It will significantly improve their income by being able to refrigerate/freeze the catch that they do not sell, then be able to sell the fish at a later time. The World Bank started the project over 5 years ago but the contractors ran off with the funds to finish it.  Over the last 3 years the families themselves have saved $4,500 of the $17,650 needed to complete the work and install the power and refrigeration unit.  Your investment will make a huge difference and impact many.

About The Project

$17,650.00 TOTAL NEEDED FOR 2 MAJOR PROJECTS
           1) PURCHASE OF A 13 KVA GENERATOR AND 3 LARGE FREEZERS
           2) OPEN UP A FISHING STORE WITH AN ASSORTMENT OF FISHING GEAR

$4,500.00 invested by the fishing village families

Your important investment will impact  the ENTIRE community of King Gray Beach fishing village near Paynesville. Your investment will help pay for 3 large freezers (cost $3500) to help keep the fish and lobster cold and fresh for future sales and allow the fisherman to earn on days that inclement weather doesn't allow them to fish. The freezer will give the fisherman's peace of mind, so if they arrive late to the harbor, they don't have to worry about decreased customers and selling the catch of the day at "give away prices". This cold storage project will also help the nearby fishing communities. This project will be an income generating business from the storage fees paid by the fisherman. Your investment also will go towards the purchase of a 13 kva generator (which costs about $7680). Part 2 of the project is to open up a much needed fishing store with a whole assortment of different fishing gear. Currently, the fisherman from Paynesville,  purchase fishing gear from Monrovia which is very expensive in terms of the cost of fishing gear and also in terms of travel cost. The fishing community wants to purchase the fishing gear from Guinea or Sierra Leone which they can purchase at very low costs.

Paying it Forward

The large refrigerators/freezors will be shared by all in the village and other fishing communities as well. This village has developed a strong sense of community where they share and take care of one another.  They are also willing to help others not in their village to also improve their lives.

Backstory

5 yrs ago (~ 2015) the fishing village received attention from the World Bank which committed to financing a storage facility and a freezer. What eventually happened was that the funding was turned over to a contractor that only finished the building then ran off with the funds for the freezers and other items. Now the villagers are each investing into the initiative to finish the project. They have collectively saved $4500 in the last 3 years. This resident driven project will improve the lives of many families from the fishing community , will double their income by selling more fish (because of the freezer) and allow them to open a store to sell an array of fishing gear. This cold storage project will be income generating for the community and impact the surrounding communities as well. This fishing community has agreed to collectively pay for the registration of the business, the cost of transport to Sierra Leone/ Guinea and the tax incurred by bringing the nets/material into Liberia.
