• This project aims to provide sustainable, economical sanitation options to those who may lack plumbing or septic tanks. Compost toilets, which use natural processes like decomposition to recycle human waste, are one category of options available for families.

About The Project

$600 is the cost of each toilet

$5,000 is our goal to provide sanitation options to approximately 80-100 residents

Future Leaders Initiative Inc. offers bio-filtration waste treatment systems. Each unit costs about $600 USD. Each unit serves 10+ individuals, making it an ideal solution for families and communities.

Project Impact

This solution combats climate change through three distinct mechanisms:

  1. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions compared to alternative sanitation practices
  2. Offsetting synthetic fertilizer use
  3. Sequestering carbon in soils through compost amendments

Health Benefits

On the whole, the implementation of compost toilets and other sanitation initiatives have demonstrably reduced the spread of germs and potentially lethal diseases, within households and across communities.

Environmental Benefits

Composting combats the erosive qualities of industrial farming and other practices that contribute to poor quality soil, improving soil through temperature regulation, moisture retention, and other means. Composting also eliminates the need for desludging efforts and the disposal of the human waste.

Economic Benefits

Some of the poorest families in Liberia make $50 a month; yet, some five dollars of this income per week goes towards vegetables.  These composting solutions could boost the accessibility and production of no-cost fresh produce, since compost material provides free fertilizer to grow food.

Backstory

Compost toilets are less expensive than plumbing toilets, can be used as community toilets (similar to portable toilets & restrooms), and tend to be more sanitary than other conventional treatment solutions. Some current solutions include bagging, cementing, and pit latrines. However, these options do not offer wide-scale solutions that can accommodate substantial use. Compost toilets provide an accessible and sustainable solution for long-term waste management.
