• LET'S GET IT DONE CAMPAIGN-

With a population of around 3,500, Sabin sits in the center of the Pipeline community in Paynesville Liberia without a community owned water pump. Not only does the lack of public access to clean drinking water within the community create inconvenience and inequality amongst residents, but it also leads to negative health outcomes for residents, predominantly digestion issues caused by drinking unsafe water which causes waterborne illnesses. With this in mind, the families of the Pipeline community have come together to work on this water well project which will provide potable water for nearly 2,000, around 57%, of the community residents.

About The Project

$2000 needed for project
$1200 contributed by members of PDC and the community
$3200 total cost of project

This project will involve the installation of a well and handpump on a piece of landed donated by community members and will be owned by community members.
The well will be 300 feet deep, drilled because the clay content of the soil makes normal digging methods more difficult, lined with PVC pipes, and installed along with a handpump constructed by trained water technicians.
The families have themselves contributed $800.00 along with $400.00 from fellow community members and have prioritized community fundraising, financial transparency and accountability, and safe and efficient construction. Project leaders include Cecilia B. Dukuly (Project Head), Ruth C. Wreh (Assistant Project Head), Teta Zorkruah (Treasurer), and Mamie Kahneh (Secretary). The project should take just around a week to complete and aims to finish by June 2024.

Paying it Forward

The communal benefits of this project include the community ownership over this collective resource, expanding access to clean water in serviced community, decreasing in-community cases of waterborne and digestive illnesses, exercising of local agency, and strengthening of community ties. This project strives to meet community needs, has community investment and support, and is well organized and composed.
The leaders of this project can also be mentors for others that are wanting clean water in their communities as well.

Backstory

This project is spearheaded by both the old and new family participants working together within the community. The land for the well and pump was donated by community members to the project leaders. Community contribution and community ownership are two of the most important pillars of this project and defines the approach of many of the participant-led projects. Not only was this project born from the common need for accessible, potable water for the Sabin Pipeline community, but the desire to increase shared resources, and ameliorate health outcomes for members. This project like many across this platform is community based and community focused. The project leaders and participants are all investing in each other and themselves which serves to strengthen the planning, coordination, completion, and impact of these projects.
