• Philip runs a barber shop in Gishondori Village, near Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. As a side business he charges cell phones. He would like to convert the shop to a full-service hair salon. Through this business expansion Philip will be able to give girls and women local access to beauty services.

About The Project

$880 needed to purchase more equipment for his shop
$170 contributed by Philip towards his project

With initial investments Philip bought a new set of electric clippers and a music system for his customers to enjoy. He also used some of this money to purchase and donate study materials for school exams, and he increased his monthly savings contribution. With future investments he will purchase more salon equipment. An increased income will assure his children’s school tuition is paid. Philip offers training and employment to local youth. He just began record keeping for his business. He is encouraging other families to do the same as it will help them learn to run their businesses better.

Paying it Forward

Philip currently donates to schools in various ways. He plans to donate money to a project that will distribute reusable sanitary pads and face masks to rural schools. He offers barber training to local youth, and so far, three of these young men are now working.

Backstory

Philip and his wife, Juliet, live with their 5 school aged children. Juliet is a farmer growing Irish potatoes, wheat, beans and maize in the fertile soils of the area. During the Covid lockdown, their oldest son trained to be a brick layer and the other boys looked after the family goats and sheep. Philip is very proud of his boys. The family has a garden which provides fruits and vegetables for a healthy diet. One of Philip’s goals is to build a larger home. Schools and medical facilities are nearby but travel outside the village is challenging as the roads are poorly developed. He recognizes growth in the area due to the development of the national park. Philip would like to see his community come together and discuss conservation issues like encouraging organic farming practices.
