  • Mercy is a farmer who rears sheep in Mahani 2, a village in Kamwenge district in Uganda. She plans to expand her sheep farming business because she says many people are shifting from goats to sheep because they are not affected by diseases.

About The Project

Mercy had a piggery project, but she has gradually shifted to sheep rearing, a move she attributes to disease resistance that pigs have, compared to pigs. Her parents and other family members help her in taking care of the pigs and she is happy that sheep are easier to take care of, they multiply very fast, and they have market. 

She plans to expand and buy more sheep so that she sells more regularly and gets profits. She says that would provide the community with a source of affordable sheep since those who need sheep normally have to go far in markets.


Backstory

Mercy Akampurira is a 30-year-old woman who lives with her parents and her two children. Her parents grow maize and beans and also support her in taking care of her sheep. She is happy that she has land to rear her sheep and she is able to hire more land if needed.

She is proud that she has been able to buy 2 plots in a nearby market, but she is concerned that they have poor quality schools in their community and that prices of agricultural produce are very low, yet manufactured goods are very expensive.
