About The Project

The Central Buchanan Market Building Project proposes to build a new market hall in Buchanan where local vendors can sell their dry goods products. Currently there are over 80 vendors in Central Buchanan who sell their goods in an open air market and another 50 vendors who sell products in front of their homes. These vendors are exposed to the elements and their products often spoil due to rain and unsuitable storage facilities. With the opening of the new market building, these vendors would have a more adequate place to store and sell their goods. The market hall will also be more attractive to customers, creating a more pleasant shopping experience.

Ten families, all currently vendors in the open air market, have joined together to implement this project. Each family will contribute $15 USD to the project. These funds will be used to hire five people to dig the foundation and do back-filling work. Apart from this, the families have also leveraged the support of the community to provide space to store the project materials safely and to volunteer time to work in the construction of the market and in providing food and water to the workers during the construction.

The group of families have already reached an agreement with the owner of the land where the market will be built, to lease the land for $60 USD per year. In order to raise these funds and generate an income from the market, each vendor will be charged 40 Liberian Dollars weekly. This will generate enough income to pay the lease, maintain the market, and make annual improvements. After the first year, they plan to construct a public toilet at the market building.

It is estimated that the project will be completed in three months. Tentatively scheduled for January - April 2024.

Paying it Forward

The Central Buchanan Market Building will benefit the current 130 vendors in the community. They will have a space within the market building to sell their products. The project also benefits the community at large as it provides a more enjoyable shopping experience, protected from the elements.

Each year, with income generated by the market building through rent collected from the vendors, improvements will be made to the market. In the first year, the group would like to construct a public toilet that can be accessed by market customers and anyone in the community.

Backstory

The idea for this project came out of a group of PDC families - all women and all vendors in the open air market or selling products from their home. As a way to improve their own small businesses and establish a larger group business, the group decided to build a market building. This would benefit each of the members by providing a more suitable space for their businesses while also allowing them to generate some income from being the owners of the market building.

I am Nessie Sackie, the head of the project. The group also includes Rebecca (secretary), Beatrice S., Marian, Helena, Hannah, Esther, Beatrice K., Theresa, and Rose. So far we have each contributed $15 USD to the project and have secured a lease agreement for the land where we will build the market.
