Backstory
With the rising numbers of coronavirus in the world 5.5 million to date 5-26, leaders in Buchanan, Liberia Christopher Yarwoe and Adrian Brown in Paynesville working in collaboration with the Community Independence Initiative in the US , started a Prevent Coronavirus Campaign. Using the data collected from different cities in the United States, it became evident that prevention would be the key to saving lives in Liberia. The current state of the hospitals in Liberia, the lack of adequate facilities to care for patients requiring advance life support would probably result in poor outcome. Educating the citizens through flyers posted in highly trafficked areas markets etc. and radio jingles (produced and broad casted by Chris Yarwoe) aired at least 8x daily thru Magic FM Community Radio. The station serves 125,000 citizens in Bassa County and the surrounding counties. Media will be the avenue of outreach for the prevention campaign. We would be encouraging the citizens to stay at home, utilize frequent hand washing (we provided some families with large buckets and soap), encourage social distancing and wear a handmade mask or scarf while outdoors. The families participating in the Community Independence Initiative will lead the peer to peer education campaign and the distribution of the masks in their areas. The residents stated that currently food is really needed so 5000 lbs of rice was purchased and distributed to the families in most need.
