LB0016: Thomas worked in security personnel prior to the Liberian Civil War but struggled to find employment after the war ended. He worked as a ship chandler at the Port of Buchanan until he had saved enough to start his own dry-goods store. He received a loan in 2017 to continue his business, but due to the economic downturn, the interest rate has been increasing. A small investment will allow Thomas to overcome current financial hardships and continue to support his family and community.

With the rising numbers of coronavirus in the world 5.5 million to date 5-26, leaders in Buchanan, Liberia Christopher Yarwoe and Adrian Brown in Paynesville working in collaboration with the Community Independence Initiative in the US , started a Prevent Coronavirus Campaign. Using the data collected from different cities in the United States, it became evident that prevention would be the key to saving lives in Liberia. The current state of the hospitals in Liberia, the lack of adequate facilities to care for patients requiring advance life support would probably result in poor outcome. Educating the citizens through flyers posted in highly trafficked areas markets etc. and radio jingles (produced and broad casted by Chris Yarwoe) aired at least 8x daily thru Magic FM Community Radio. The station serves 125,000 citizens in Bassa County and the surrounding counties. Media will be the avenue of outreach for the prevention campaign. We would be encouraging the citizens to stay at home, utilize frequent hand washing (we provided some families with large buckets and soap), encourage social distancing and wear a handmade mask or scarf while outdoors. The families participating in the Community Independence Initiative will lead the peer to peer education campaign and the distribution of the masks in their areas. The residents stated that currently food is really needed so 5000 lbs of rice was purchased and distributed to the families in most need.

Compost toilets are less expensive than plumbing toilets, can be used as community toilets (similar to portable toilets & restrooms), and tend to be more sanitary than other conventional treatment solutions. Some current solutions include bagging, cementing, and pit latrines. However, these options do not offer wide-scale solutions that can accommodate substantial use. Compost toilets provide an accessible and sustainable solution for long-term waste management.

RESIDENTS in Buchanan and Paynesville initiated a PREVENT CORONAVIRUS CAMPAIGN. Women in the community sewed handmade masks for distribution. Community outreach outlined key COVID 19 PREVENTION INFORMATION ie. stay at home, frequent hand washing, social distancing and wearing masks outdoors was thru educational flyers and radio jingles. 6/20 residents indicated that rice, food was a priority, so monies went to the purchase and distribution of rice for those in most need. Now monies collected will be directed to the hospital.
Thomas sells soaps, dry goods and a variety of products. With only a $100 investment he was able to triple his sales in March of this year before the Covid lockdown. With a small additional investment, Thomas will expand his store to meet the community's growing need for building materials and improved sanitation. He anticipates that he will be able to hire four more workers and lend money to other families also hoping to grow their businesses.
With a little more money, Patience will be able to purchase new hair products, hire more employees, and continue expanding her business. With an investment from CII, she was able to increase her business by almost 70%. She is also a supportive mother of seven and plans to spend her extra income on a generator for light and to help with her children's tuition.
This project aims to provide sustainable, economical sanitation options to those who may lack plumbing or septic tanks. Compost toilets, which use natural processes like decomposition to recycle human waste, are one category of options available for families.
