Many of these “tailors” focus on the design and creation of clothing while others are focused on repair. Clothing is produced on a traditional sewing machine using fabric or from a knitting machine using yarn. Colorful African kitenge fabric is very popular in the garments of this region. Most of these tailors rent their machines with the goal of owning one or two machines. To expand their business, some owners have a goal to move into a space where they can sell fabric and materials in addition to their clothing. Many of these projects want to pay it forward by offering training to youth in their villages.
