• Kabeni lives in Nyagakenke Village, very near the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Despite the poor roads, this area attracts tourists to the National Park. The tourist market offers an opportunity to grow his craft business and open a shop selling items made by the local artisans.

About The Project

$750 needed to purchase more inventory to build his business
$5 contributed by Kabeni towards his project

With your investment Kabeni will continue to buy and sell locally made crafts. He hopes to expand his shop space to offer a wider variety of crafts. Currently he sells carvings, masks, baskets and gorilla marked sticks. The craft shop will contribute to the family income and attract tourists to the village, where tourist dollars will potentially help other businesses.

Paying it Forward

He hopes his business will attract tourists to the community. In turn this could help other families whose businesses focus on tourism.

Backstory

Kabeni lives with two wives and five children. The women are farmers and earn an income from providing “casual labor” working for other community families as they don’t have their own garden plots. His family, like many Batwa people, attempt to have multiple means to make a living. They wish to start their own farming business starting with leasing a small plot of land to grow vegetables and keep domestic animals for a source for organic fertilizer. Challenges for Kabeni and his family are: living in a permanent  home vs  temporary structure; better sanitation system; getting safe drinking water; and finding medicine locally.
