About The Project

$450 is the amount Sando needs to open a mini provision shop to expand her business
$150 is the amount she has already saved and pledged to invest toward that goal.

In March, Sando got a $100 investment from CII and in just one month Sando tripled her business revenue.  It was a great investment.  Sando’s goal is to expand from a table to a mini provision shop where she can begin to sell items such as rice, oil, and soap in larger quantities for greater profit than previously. In conjunction with this, she hopes to increase farmland from one plot to three plots to cultivate additional vegetables and buy viable/imported seeds for more production/profit.

Long-term, she is interested in investing in her community and region. Not only would she like to share her shopkeeping experience and agricultural talent with other community dwellers, she will commit to investing in two other families if she receives an investment.  She is also committed to supporting her family. Sando’s two daughters plait hair very well, so she would like to encourage them to open a mini or sizeable salon. She also hopes to eventually add two rooms to her house.

Paying it Forward

Over this last year Sando has been helping families that she knows mostly in Margibi county.  She sends money to help a subsistence farmer and some students.  In the last month one of her neighbors had a baby and they didn't have anything so she helped them.  She is committed to help others as her life improves.

Backstory

LB0046:  Initially, in 2012, the company Sando’s husband was working for closed and he was paid off. The money he got from the company was used to complete their house and they stopped paying rent. Her husband is an agriculturist and with what he was generating from the vegetable garden, they could not meet the full support of the home. So she decided to start a small market with $700 LRD ($3.50 USD). The money was used to buy $500 LRD ($2.50 USD) farinha or gari, $100 LRD ($0.50 USD) sugar, and $100 LRD ($0.50 USD) to change the flavor. It gave rise to new taste to customers. From that point, customers started coming to purchase it on the increase. From the little investment, she accumulated $2,100 LRD ($10.50 USD). After that, she did a market survey to know the main needs of the community dwellers. From the survey, she included rice, palm oil, argo oil, and dry pepper in what is considered to be Kissi market. Kissi is an ethnic tribe in Liberia, who are originally from Lofa County. In two months’ time, she was able to generate $5,500 LRD ($27.50 USD). Eventually, she joined a weekly susu of $30,000 LRD ($150 USD) with ten persons. She was the last person to receive payout in the amount of $30,000 LRD ($150 USD). She used the money to add up her initial capital. At present, her business is mixed dry goods made of all varieties of products. She compensates two persons, herself, friends, and family members as gestures. With the current economic challenge in Liberia, this is the only means the family depends on to feed the home and takes care of their basic needs.
