About The Project

$900 needed to purchase materials to build a hen house and add more chickens
$135 contributed by Jackson towards his project

With an initial investment Jackson bought more chickens and joined a savings program. He has a sustainable poultry operation. He hopes other families will learn from his success as he will give them advice to start their own businesses.

Paying it Forward

Jackson wishes to give back to his community by helping others start businesses.

Backstory

Jackson works as a porter. He is a member of the Mgahinga Porters Association, helping tourists manage their activities in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. He lives with his wife and four young children. His wife recently delivered twins. His wife grows and sells Irish potatoes and cabbage. He has two uncles that help care for his children. His goals are to add more rooms to his home for his growing family and improve the sanitation system. Jackson notes there is good with bad in their community: government sponsored schools but not enough classrooms for the number of students; government medical centers but few doctors; the national park provides tourism dollars but the wild animals destroy crops. The area is very green from the volcanic soils and he likes living here.
